Black's 'Anti-Semitic' Row Escalates; Londoner's Diary

THE FEARSOME row in The Spectator about alleged anti-Semitism has escalated with some of its leading contributors accusing their proprietor of "bullying".

A month ago, the mag's owner, Conrad Black, attacked his own columnist (and former buddy) Taki for alleged anti-Semitism.

In a letter published today by editor Boris Johnson, William Dalrymple, Piers Paul Read and A N Wilson deliver a fierce broadside, welcoming Black's outbursts for making it explicit that "under Black's proprietorship, serious, critical reporting of Israel is no longer tolerated in the Telegraph group."

However, Dalrymple et al are immensely peeved because under their letter Black has published another 500-word riposte. More importantly, a grievous error in their missive, which they had spotted and asked to be taken out, was allowed to stay in - allowing Conrad Black to refute it and make fools of them.

Dalrymple gives his version of the sequence of events: "I rang Boris at three o'clock on Tuesday to discuss the error about the ownership of Conrad Black's Jerusalem Report. …
