Julia's Oscar Puts a Squeeze on Her Childhood Dentist

THE radiant smile of Julia Roberts as she won best actress is one of the enduring images of this year's Oscars, but it had her childhood dentist cursing.

You might imagine those perfect gleaming teeth are the masterpiece of some famous Hollywood dental technician, but they owe much to Dr Ted Aspes based in Miss Robert's home town of Smyrna, Georgia, population 10,000.

The dentist made a promise 25 years ago when he first opened his practice and treated an eight-year-old patient, Julie Fiona Roberts.

The pledge on the surgery wall read then, as today: "I pledge to give a free tube of toothpaste to every child in Smyrna if any one of my young patients achieves any of the following ..."

The unlikely list of achievements reads: winning an Olympic medal, a Pulitzer Prize, a Grammy Award, a Masters golf tournament green jacket, a Rhodes scholarship, a Heisman Trophy - an American football award - and, of course, an Oscar. …
