Vortex Celebration: Just in case any of you Stokey jazz fans don't know yet, the Vortex is about to vacate its rather jaded home and head N16-wards for Hackney's Ocean. Thankfully, they're not going quietly, inviting friends down for a sizeable jazz jam with some familiar faces.

Joining Huw Warren's quartet will be trombonist Annie Whitehead, saxy Iain Ballamy and Julian Arguelles, plus Norma Winstone and Stuart Hall. Vortex, N16, doors 8pm, [pound]12, 020 7254 6516.

BB Mak: The "big over there, unknown here" tag is a rare reversal of fortune for Anglo popsters trying to crack the American market - just ask Oasis, Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow (remember him?). From Tonight

Having bounced from label to label, Omar (right) has found a home in Oyster Music, where he produced the stunningly good Best by Far album - a gorgeous set of retro soul-jazz tunes imbued with the spirit of acts such as the Barkays, Donald Byrd and Leroy Hutson. He's still got that earthy funk quality that will keep fans happy, so forget D'angelo, check out some homegrown talent. Jazz Caf?, NW1, doors 7pm, [pound]18, 020 7344 0044.

Opera

Turandot: The brutal princess of Puccini's last opera (right) returns in the form of belting British soprano Jane Eaglen. The dying composer, renowned for portraying women in deep distress, here turns the tables as the eponymous lead beheads those suitors who cannot answer her riddles correctly, and generally behaves in a worryingly psychotic way. …
