Bergkamp Confident of Success in Europe

DENNIS BERGKAMP is convinced Arsenal have the spirit and resolve to keep alive their European dream and to shake-off the disappointment of conceding a late equaliser in the Champions League last night before they take on Manchester United in the Premiership on Sunday.

The striker and his team-mates were left devastated by the last-minute goal from Lyon's Brazilian defender Edmilson who was a target for Arsenal last summer.

Edmilson said his goal was only justice after he felt he was fouled by Bergkamp seconds before the Dutchman put Arsenal ahead. He said: "It was a clear push. That made me feel even better when I scored."

The strike keeps alive the group with three teams all capable of joining Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals.

Arsenal face Moscow Spartak - beaten 3-0 by the Germans last night - at Highbury in a fortnight but they will go into the match holding on to second place by a point.

Bergkamp said: "At the moment, we feel a bit down. That is normal. But we are confident we can still go through. When we look at the table today we are still in second place and we are a point clear of the third-placed team with a home game coming up.

"As for Sunday, we have experience in this kind of situation. We are used to having only two or three days to get ready for the next game."

Bergkamp's goal and all-round contribution caught the eye but he revealed he feels no more confident of keeping his place in the starting line-up under the rotation system employed by manager Arsene Wenger which has left him, Nwankwo Kanu and Sylvain Wiltord frequently frustrated this season.

He said: "It is not my decision. I always feel strong about my position and I feel I should be in there but if you ask the other three strikers they will say they should play.

"I am happy with my form for the last few weeks and the manager can see that as well. …
