Canada's Dry Response to Our Volley on Vancouver

THIS time, it seems, we have gone a step too far, writes Patrick Sawer.

If you were thinking of taking your summer holidays in Canada forget about it. You will not be welcome.

Our story on Monday poking admittedly robust fun at the fair city of Vancouver, following the announcement it had come top of a survey of quality of life in 215 cities around the world, has caused grave offence.

The city's newspaper The Province, immediately hit back, taking the mickey out of our weather, our alarming crime rate, and the fact London came 40th in the same league table, tying with Lexington, Kentucky and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Now don't get us started on the subject of Winston-Salem, please.

Pity", and illustrated with a picture of a woman negotiating an east London street in the driving rain...

'IN A TRULY world-class city, nobody wastes time worrying about being world-class, right?

And if any city qualifies as world-class, it is London, right?

What to make, then, of the London Evening Standard spluttering indignantly over a survey that says the quality of life is better - much better in little, young Vancouver?

"There really is no comparison," sniffs writer Valentine Low in yesterday's Standard. Low boasts that the British capital - ranked 40th on the William J Mercer liveability index - is "a city rich in history and culture, the birthplace of Charles Dickens [and] the home of parliamentary democracy" while Vancouver is "a city only just over 100 years old which, apart from having lots of mountains and water, is chiefly famous for giving the world Bryan Adams, Pamela Anderson, Michael J Fox and the Vancouver Island marmot. …
