Robo-Lock Unveils Plan for Total Domination

DANNY GREWCOCK is on a quest for rugby perfection. The Saracens lock-forward has a hunger for self-improvement that means work, work and more work on every aspect of his game.

The fact that Grewcock has now earned the right to regularly partner captain Martin Johnson in the England second row is, in his eyes, a reason to step up the workrate and not rest on his laurels.

While the rest of the England forwards are happy with their lineout sessions, Grewcock's will be the lone voice suggesting: "How about a couple more throws - just to get it right."

This isn't a manifestation of self-doubt, it's just a facet of Grewcock's personality that owes everything to his parents.

The 28-year-old, who wins his 24th England cap against Scotland on Saturday at Twickenham, explained: "If there was an England XV for school teachers, then my mother Jennifer would be in it. She works hard and makes sure what she does is very good. My father Jim is just the same and they never pushed me into doing anything. I chose to play rugby and they have been tremendously supportive, and having seen their work ethic, I just follow that lead.

"I don't come from a particularly sporting background. My brother Ben played a bit, but hard work was ingrained in me, and my family will be there at Twickenham on Saturday to support me.

"Someone described me as 'Robo-lock' because of the way I tackle things. I know that if I do something long enough I will pick it up.

"Other players are more talented and while I may not have the same skills, by putting in the time, I can get it right."

Grewcock had never started a championship match until this month's Wales game in Cardiff after injury and a logjam of good second rows had conspired against him. In recent seasons, Johnson, Simon Shaw and Garath Archer have been vying with Grewcock for a place in the starting line-up. …
