MANCHESTER UNITED are poised to break the British transfer record to bring Argentine international Juan Veron to Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old Lazio midfielder is reported to have completed negotiations with United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and is set to sign a five-year deal worth about [pound]80,000 a week in the next few days for a fee believed to be around [pound]22 million.

If Veron moves to Old Trafford he could line up alongside David Beckham - who was sent off while playing for England in the 1998 World Cup finals for kicking out at the Argentine.

Veron would become United's second multi-million signing of the summer following the [pound]19m capture of Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy from PSV Eindhoven.

Veron said: "I have had four enjoyable years in Italy and the time is right for another challenge.

"The one place that really excites me is England. I would love to play Premiership football."
