INCREASING numbers of young people are going on weekly drinking binges, according to figures today.

Nearly one in four men aged 16 to 24 drink more than eight units of alcohol - equivalent to four pints of beer or eight glasses of wine or spirits - on at least one night a week.

Overall, 20 per cent of all men confessed to drinking more than eight units on at least one day in the previous week.

The disturbing findings come in a report from the Office for National Statistics Omnibus survey in which 3,450 people aged over 16 were asked about their drinking habits.

Women were much less likely than men to have drunk heavily. Only eight per cent said they had drunk more than six units on at least one day in the last week.

More than six in 10 men and nearly half of women had drunk alcohol in the week before the research took place. …
