AS an American, I am compelled to respond to TR Reid's article about the manner in which Americans in general, and President Bush in particular, are portrayed in the British Press (So why won't you guys take my guy seriously? 27 June).

Nearly all the stereotypes about Americans and American culture in the local media that he mentions are, in fact, fairly accurate.

A lot of my fellow countrymen are obese, guns and drugs are ubiquitous in the country, we are a ridiculously litigious society, and the worst examples of our culture are increasingly saturating the rest of the world.

And no matter which way you look at him, George W Bush is a national embarrassment who personifies many, if not all, of the worst stereotypes.

Unfortunately, however, he cannot be easily dismissed as a bumbling, awkward idiot because of the military and political power to which he has access. Mr Reid should face the fact that, particularly in Bush's case, the stereotypical shoe is a perfect fit. …
