College Stars Top Celebration Field UNF's Joseph and Ford Win 5K Titles

Two University of North Florida cross-country and distance track runners took top honors at the 10th annual 1st Place Sports Celebration 5K yesterday.

UNF junior Zepharius Joseph won the men's overall title with a time of 14:56, and Osprey senior Jennifer Ford snagged the women's overall title with a time of 17:28.

Ford, the Division II Indoor and Outdoor national champion in the 5-kilometer run, is running events during the summer to prepare for her upcoming college season. Joseph is training for the Francophone Games later this month in Canada.

"This was a tune-up race for me. It'll help me prepare," Joseph said.

Joseph finished 1:49 ahead of second-place finisher Lee Yaracs (16:05, men 14-19), a standout cross-country and track runner from Ridgeview High School.

Joseph ran a 4:40 first mile and maintained that pace.

"I wanted to go out and set the pace early," Joseph said. …
