Bridge Building Talk Set Cedar River Meeting Thursday

The long-awaited construction of a new Cedar River Bridge on Blanding Boulevard starts Monday. And on Thursday, residents and affected property owners will get a chance to review project details at an open house from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bayview Elementary School, 3257 Lake Shore Blvd.

The aging bridge is on a main commuter route to downtown and Orange Park. The northbound side, built in 1966, is being widened first to provide an additional lane. But it will be usable during that time.

When it's completed, the southbound side, built in 1949, will be torn down and work begun on a new three-lane span. During its construction, motorists will use the northbound span.

The approaches also will be widened from four to six lanes on Blanding from Wilson Boulevard to Cassat Avenue. Two-way traffic will be maintained at all times, with no detours, said Mike Goldman, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation. …
