Southwark to Launch 'Hire by the Hour' Car Scheme

LONDON'S first official car share scheme is poised for launch in a bold venture expected to become a blueprint for schemes capital-wide.

Southwark has signed a contract with car-rental firm Avis to introduce the project in September. The "hire by the hour" scheme is aimed at giving members the advantages of car-ownership but with none of the drawbacks.

"CARvenient" also aims to help cut congestion and pollution in the capital.

Members will pay an annual fee and be issued with a personal electronic key fob that will operate a fleet of vehicles, mostly Vauxhall Astras and Corsas.

Car share members must phone to place their order at least 15 minutes in advance to reserve their vehicle for as little as an hour or for a long holiday.

Once the order is confirmed the member will pick up the car at one of a number of specially designated parking bays across the south London borough.

Members will pay a yearly subscription fee expected to be less than the [pound]99 charged by a similar, much smaller scheme in Oxford. …
