There is a changing of the guard in the athletic department at Middleburg High School. Jim Garlington, is stepping down after 21 years as athletic director on Aug. 7. Replacing him is Alan Powers, who is the school's football and baseball coach.

Garlington said the timing was right for the school to make the change.

During Garlington's tenure, he has seen Middleburg High grow considerably. He said that he leaves the position with many fond memories and confidence in the coaching staff.

Garlington echoed his principal's remarks by saying he is convinced that Powers is a tremendous choice.

"He is very dedicated," Garlington said. "He is a disciplined person; he is very organized and he communicates well with kids. He has everything going for him, including a lot of experience. Alan knows the kids and the community"

"One of the biggest reasons that I can do it and decided to do it is that I am blessed with some very good coaches in football and baseball," he said. "Without their help I could not survive the summer or the school year."

Another reason that Powers decided to take the job is because of the support he has received from the school administration
