NICOLE KIDMAN and Penelope Cruz are two glamorous film stars with something else in common - neither is having a romance with Tom Cruise.

Nicole's separation from Cruise is well documented. And now 27-year-old Penelope is denying reports that they are having an affair.

The question now is: who will be on Cruise's arm tonight? He and Nicole are going to the Hollywood premiere of her film The Others, which he co-produced.

Whichever actress he chooses, Cruise will see his estranged wife in public for the first time since their separation was announced in February. The couple's "quickie" divorce becomes final tomorrow.

In an interview yesterday, Nicole, 34, addressed Cruise's new relationship with Penelope by saying: "It's not for me to talk about publicly. It is my private life."

There was much talk in Hollywood gossip columns when Cruise, 39, loaned Cruz his Los Angeles home, prompting speculation that his desire to "move on with our lives emotionally" after the end of his marriage had more than something to do with his friendship with the Spanish actress. It was very unfair of the cynics to suggest that the relationship is no more than an elaborate stunt cooked up by the two stars' publicity machines.

According to director Cameron Crowe, Penelope and Tom fell in love on screen while making Vanilla Sky. "In this movie we really had to have this intense love story. So Penelope had to truly fall in love. And Tom falls in love with her," he tells September's Vanity Fair.

"They did the rarest thing - they fell in love with someone onscreen. You watch them actually go through that hideous, great, awful, intoxicating moment. Without it, we wouldn't have a movie. In this movie, these two have to fall in love. The first time we screened the movie - just in-house - it was the kind of situation where at the end you get that reaction of, 'Wow! …
