Most coaches look at the first few days of practice without pads as a necessary evil; though hardly a barometer to judge whether players are ready for football.

FSU coach Bobby Bowden will have a better gauge today when the 'Noles put on pads for the first time.

"What you found out the first day, you probably didn't learn anymore the third day," Bowden said. "Now you add another dimension to it."

The Seminoles will work out in shells -- helmets and shoulder pads -- for 24 five-minute periods this morning and return to shorts for the evening session.

Among the players who will be held out of contact drills are: FB William McCray (pectoral tear), LB Willie Jones (knee), WR Talman Gardner (hamstring), WR Atrews Bell (hamstring), TE Carver Donaldson (groin) and FB Randy Golightly (back).


Following up a pair of sloppy Monday sessions, quarterback contenders Chris Rix and Anquan Boldin enjoyed far better results during yesterday's workouts. …
