BABIES born outside marriage are six times more likely to die from cot death than those bor n to married parents, according to figur es pub lished today.

The results came as the Government promised to reduce inequalities in health across England, and between ric h and poor.

A consultation document launched by the De par t-ment of Health underlines the widel y held vie w tha t there are geo graphical and social dif fer ences in life expectancy and inf ant mortality.

P u blic health minister Yvette Cooper said: "What greater inequity can there be than to die younger and suffer more illness thr oughout your life as a result of where you live ,what you do and how m u ch your parents ear ned?"
