Mom-Daughter Team Aces Competition

For the two-time champions of the USTA Mother/Daughter Grass Court Championship, the chemistry has been like a fine wine -- getting better with time.

Toni and Lynn Novack have played as a mother-daughter team since Lynn, 21, was 8 years old and won their first mother-daughter title in 1999. For 13 years, they have practiced together, observed each other and learned from each other.

They attribute their two championships in six national Mother-Daughter Championship tournaments (plus being runners-up four times) to their knowledge of each other and how they play.

"Mom is so focused on the court, so totally in control that she knows what either of us should do with any given shot, any given point," Lynn Novack said.

But this year is a little different. While Toni is living in Hawaii, Lynn lives in Ponte Vedra.

Lynn, a graduate of Nease High School, has played on and captained the University of Hawaii's Lady Wahine Rainbow tennis team. During her time in Hawaii, Lynn and her mother could play together and practice together, but after Lynn's graduation in May, their practice time has been all but eliminated.

The Novack team relies heavily on the on-court chemistry they have forged together for the past 13 years. Lynn is the power and Toni is the finesse. Their "zoom and flutter" style of play, as they call it, has been their staple in doubles play.

Toni, a mother of two, has coached and instructed her daughters in the fine points of tennis almost all their lives. She is a former tennis coach at Jacksonville University and The Bolles School and has held workshops and seminars all over the world. Without fail, her most attentive pupil was Lynn.

Toni Novack is the daughter of Florida teaching pro Ray Kramer and the wife of former tennis pro Mike Novack. Both Toni and Mike Novack played on the tour, Toni competing in the French Open and U. …
