There is nothing new about the technologies that make this miracle work. The genius lies in the details, the way ArialPhone's designers wed the voice recognition powers of Pentium-class PCs and new breakthroughs in batteries and digital phone circuit design.

ArialPhone is a 900-megahertz telephone that consists of a digitizing base station and a 2-ounce wireless headphone transmitter-receiver. The transmitter-receiver enjoys a range exceeding 100 feet.

The base station docks with the PC through a USB port, and the bundled software includes the voice recognition modules that make it work. The software seeks out the address book in either Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express and creates a dictionary of just those names.

When any user speaks a name into the headpiece, the software scans the address list and finds the name and places the call.

There are downsides, of course. If the computer crashes, the phone doesn't work. Also, one must learn a special set of commands to order the device to do things like answer a call, hang up if a call doesn't go through, etc.

At $400 this is a luxury to be sure, but it becomes a delight indeed once one experiences the freedom. …
