First-Grade Teacher Robbins Is Honored for Excellence

Barbara Robbins loves being a teacher just as much now as when she started 30 years ago.

It shows in the way her pupils, past and present, and their parents feel about her. In droves, they nominated her to be the Orange Park Wal-Mart store's Teacher of the Year as part of the company's nationwide effort to recognize excellence in education.

The effort paid off.

Robbins, who has been a first-grade teacher at Lakeside Elementary School for 25 years, got that recognition from the local store and now is in the running for state and national honors.

"Barbara is amazing," said store Manager Jerry Whitecotton. "We are going to support her lock, stock and barrel."

Robbins said she was shocked when she found out about the honor, which brought her school a $500 grant and her a certificate and a Wal-Mart vest. She also was recognized by Clay County School Board and Clay County Education Foundation. …
