Last Annual Family Frolics 1 for the Ages

GREEN COVE SPRINGS -- Picnics in the park, playing kick ball, mom and dad taking photos, and kids splashing in the pool are all part of the lazy days of summer that will soon be nearing an end, but on Labor Day several families in Green Cove Springs got in at least one more day of fun and sun at the 35th annual Family Frolics held at Spring Park.

The festival, sponsored for the past three years by the city of Green Cove, was packed with musical entertainment, children's activities, arts and crafts displays and tables full of a variety of foods. Even though a planned fireworks extravaganza had to be canceled due to a lightning strike from severe storms in the area, the day's scheduled activities were a welcomed event to Jack Blipper, an avid attendee of the gala occurrence for the past 20 years.

"I really like sitting out by the river and listening to the music," Blipper said. "At my age I would just be sitting at home. Coming here gives me the chance to enjoy myself and see people I know."

June and Walter Robins, long-time Green Cove residents, said that coming to the festival was part of an early celebration marking their 54th wedding anniversary.

"This was a way for us to start early and celebrate two occasions," said June Robins. "We are glad we can still walk around and look at all the booths and grab a hot dog or egg roll if we want it."

While most enjoyed the activities planned and staffed by volunteers like Clay County School Board employee Mark Davis, many may not have realized that they were taking part in the last annual Family Frolics.

"We will be doing something different next year, but it is important to note that none of this could have taken place without the help of our many volunteers," Davis said. "Their commitment is what makes all of this work and we will need help in planning a new program next spring. …
