White Falls Late Commanders Lose in Game's Final Minute

With under a minute to play last night in White's football game against Altamonte Springs Lake Brantley, the Commanders had the ball, the lead, and a seemingly tight grasp on a 1-0 start in District 1-6A play.

Corey Andrade changed all that.

Final score: Lake Brantley 16, White 12, and when Andrade took a screen pass 47 yards for a touchdown with only 11 seconds remaining, the Patriots had their first and only lead of the game.

"One mark of Lake Brantley football is that nobody ever quits," said Patriots coach George Clayton. "That showed tonight."

White led 12-7 with possession as the clock ticked under a minute. Facing a fourth-and-short from its own 27-yard line, Commanders quarterback Charles Hall took an intentional safety, running back through his own end zone to pull the Patriots within 12-9. The ensuing kick return gave Lake Brantley possession on the White 47, setting up Andrade's game-winning thriller. The senior took a screen to the visiting sideline, shook a tackle and cut back across the field for the game-winner.

"All the coaches and players were yelling for me to get out of bounds with it," said Andrade. "They were just trying to get into field goal range to tie it. But something told me to try to make something happen, and when I cut back, it was wide open."

Commanders coach Dan Disch said he does not regret the decision to take the safety.

"Our long snapper had broken a thumb, and we didn't want something to go wrong with a punt," said Disch. "And if we'd punted, it probably would have ended up it pretty much the same spot. So we took the safety and put our defense on the field, and we really only had to make one or two stops to get the win."

Instead, Andrade reversed the fortunes of a Patriots team which had trouble with its scoring chances. …
