In more "big box" retail news, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has taken steps toward a $5.6 million redevelopment of one of its Southside stores into a Wal-Mart Supercenter that would create 166 jobs.

In a request to the Jacksonville Planning and Development Department for an informal concurrency review, Wal-Mart and its engineering agent, Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc., outlined a proposal to demolish the Wal-Mart at 8808 Beach Blvd. and rebuild the site into a Supercenter.

The application shows that Wal-Mart would take down the 108,486-square-foot store and put up a Supercenter almost twice the size, at 215,000 square feet. The 35.33-acre site is near Southside Boulevard.

The review, which determines the level of city services available to support the project, shows the Supercenter would generate 110 full-time and 56 part-time jobs.

Wal-Mart operates 1,657 traditional stores, 486 Sam's Club stores and 1,106 Supercenters. The Supercenters provide full grocery lines as well as general merchandise and services, such as vision centers, tire and lube express centers, portrait studios and photo centers.

CORPORATE MOVE: The Lending Group Inc., a national mortgage wholesaler based in Chicago, intends to relocate its headquarters to Jacksonville and open an acquisitions division. …
