Old Middleburg Road's sharp curves will be straightened. The road will be widened from two lanes to four. And a landscaped median will be built.

But some residents fear it will give motorists an invitation to speed and said they prefer turn lanes to medians.

"You're going to take a two-lane road where people already drive too fast, make it more dangerous, smooth out the curves and add a U-turn at the intersections," resident Bruce Arthur said at a community meeting Monday night sponsored by Councilwoman Alberta Hipps and the city Department of Public Works. "That means there will be pretty long gaps without turn lanes."

The meeting was held to get input from residents before the project is designed. About 80 people attended the session at Enterprise Learning Academy on Old Middleburg. It will be at least two years before construction begins.

The project is intended to make traffic flow better, provide safer intersections, improve drainage and reduce flooding during heavy rains, said Ray Reissener of the engineering firm managing the project. The conceptual design calls for:

-- A four-lane divided road with a 22-foot median, curbs, gutters, 4-foot bike lanes, 5-foot sidewalks and left- and right-turn lanes at intersections.

-- Six stormwater retention ponds with a connecting drainage pipe system that will mean a "remarkable improvement in drainage," Reissener said.

-- Shifting the road alignment at Country Mill Lane west to meet 103rd Street about 1,100 feet west of the existing intersection. The intent is to provide greater distance between the intersections of Shindler Road and 103rd and Old Middleburg and 103rd.

-- A new connector road to be constructed between the old and new sections of Old Middleburg. Converting the old section to cul-de-sacs. …
