Tricky Victory Fake Punt Helps Bolles Score Winning TD against Raines

Bolles took a page out of Florida State's playbook and used it to perfection in a 10-6 victory over Raines in a defensive, turnover-marred contest.

The play came in the third quarter with Raines holding on to a 6-3 lead. The Bulldogs drive had stalled on the Vikings' 46, and with a 4th-and-4 near midfield, were expected to punt. But Bolles coach Corky Rogers had other ideas.

He sent sophomore tailback Bryan Hassel back into the game to run the "bum-a-rooskie", a distant cousin of the Seminoles' "fumble-rooskie." The snap went to Hassel who was lined up 10 yards in front of the punter. When he caught the ball, he turned around and bent over, hiding the ball in his midsection. The rest of the Bulldogs offense took off to the right side as if it was an end sweep.

With all of Raines' defensive players heading that way, Hassel sprinted down the left sideline -- alone. He was finally tackled at the 13-yard line, and with a facemask call tacked on, the Bulldogs had first-and-goal at the seven, where Justin Glover took it into the end zone on the next play.

"We work on that play every week in practice," said Hassel. "We were practicing on it yesterday and we fumbled it twice. Coach kept making us do it again. He said we might use it in this game and he wanted it done right."

While it turned out to be the play that set up the winning score, the Bulldogs would have needed more than one scoring drive had it not been for their defense. They held Raines (4-2, 1-1 in District 3-4A) to just 52 rushing yards and 11 passing yards in the second half, while recovering two fumbles.

"No question, that was our best defensive effort of the year," said Rogers. "They were outstanding, and gave a great effort against a solid Raines team. I am really proud of this group.

"I have a lot of respect for Raines and coach Welton Coffey for coming here and playing us. …
