COLUMBUS DAY Go Ahead, Celebrate

The annual effort to trash the historical achievement of Christopher Columbus is in full swing. That's reason enough to celebrate Columbus Day. Americans should resist the efforts of those who want to toss Western civilization in the trashbin of history.

Some who participate in the effort merely are ignorant of history. But other revisionists are anti-American, anti-capitalism or anti-freedom.

Look at this politically correct crowd long enough and you will find some of the same people who are blaming America for the terrorist attacks against the nation Sept. 11.

They measure the motivations and actions of a 15th-century explorer against the morals and mores of the 21st century in order to arrive at the conclusion that Columbus was an "invader" who brought only death and destruction to these shores.

No matter who got to America first, the landing of Columbus resulted in the transference of Western culture to a land that had been inhabited by hunter- gatherers and had not advanced for thousands of years. …
