Brush Up Your Shakespeare as Broadway Show Arrives

ON BROADWAY it has just survived - and then only after cast and crew took a 50 per cent pay cut - but famed director Michael Blakemore is confident his production of Kiss Me Kate will enjoy a successful London run.

Speaking from rehearsals at the Victoria Palace Theatre, where the show starts previewing on 16 October, Mr Blakemore said: "This show represents the best in traditional Broadway."

In the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks on America last month, audiences disappeared and the Broadway production, which had won five Tony Awards, was set to close.

Then the cast and crew offered to take the pay cut - with half of that money spent donating tickets to aid workers. Now, says Blakemore, the show is doing "terrific business" there again.

And Cole Porter's irresistible songs, combined with a touch of Shakespeare and stars brought from Broadway should help Kiss Me Kate reproduce its success here.

Marin Mazzie was the original shrewish Lilli Vanessi/Katherine character on Broadway, and Michael Berresse starred opposite her as Bill Calhoun.

They are joined in London by Brent Barrett, in the Fred Graham/Petruchio role, and Nancy Anderson as Lois Lane/Bianca.

POLICE took more than an hour to respond to a burglary at a warehouse, allowing thieves to escape with [pound]35,000 of equipment, it emerged today.

Despite a neighbour raising the alarm immediately, the raiders were able to make two visits to the same premises before officers arrived - but it was too late to make arrests.

The force has launched an inquiry after Paul Morris, 39, owner of Fineland Forestry in Chalfont St Peter, Bucks, wrote to Thames Valley Chief Constable Sir Charles Pollard to complain.
