Remember all those years when Florida State dreaded the prospect of the Miami game coming down to one of their kickers making a late-game field goal?

That won't be the case when the teams meet today at Doak Campbell Stadium. FSU fans would probably welcome the outcome riding on the foot of freshman Xavier Beitia (pronounced Sa-VEEE-ed Bay-thee-a) more than Sebastian Janikowski would welcome a discount on his next purchase of GHB or dance lessons. . . .

Not to alarm the Seminoles or anything, but I believe their kicker's name is Spanish for Wide Right. . . . At age 80, former University of Miami head coach Lou Saban is back on the sidelines as head coach at Division III Chowan College in North Carolina. He's going to have to stick around awhile to beat Amos Alonzo Stagg, who coached at Pacific until he was 84 -- which may be Joe Paterno's age when the Penn State legend finally surpasses the record of Paul "Bear" Bryant for Division I-A coaching victories. . . . Just last week, the Jaguars were 2-and-1 and now it looks more like 2-and-done. . . .

It's very possible that Miami, which is ranked 13th in the unofficial Bowl Championship Series rankings compiled by expert Jerry Palm, could again be odd-team-out of the national championship game. Even if the Hurricanes go undefeated and are ranked No. 1 in both polls, they may not have the BCS points to qualify for the Rose Bowl. If any combination of two teams among this group -- Florida, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Nebraska and UCLA -- also has a perfect regular season, the 'Canes will likely wind up watching the championship game on TV again. . . . Perhaps the successor to Houston Astros manager Larry Dierker can get it through the players' heads that postseason doesn't mean they have to perform in a posthumous state. …
