St. Johns Country Day School Headmaster Stephen F. Russey has announced that eight students have been recognized by National Merit Scholarship programs for their scholastic excellence. Michael James, Amanda McGinn, Amanda Shockley and Michael Greenlee were named semifinalists in the 2002 National Merit Scholarship competition. Courtney Caplin, Nicole Dunaway, Kara Gilligan and Megan Winton were named commended scholars. emifinalists scored among the top 1.5 percent of all high school students in Florida who took the test last year; commended scholars scored within the top 3 percent of all students taking the test.

FLEMING ISLAND ELEMENTARY

-- First-grade students concluded their community and transportation studies with an afternoon of hands-on learning Oct. 5. Lisa Goodwin's class served as a bank and store at which each student started with $5 to spend. When students ran out of money, they had to work at the store to earn more. Heather Brochu's class presented a community hospital at which students had the chance to see an X-ray; Jean Gaugler's class served as a post office. Students bought 1-cent stamps for their hand-made postcards, sorted them and distributed them to their locations.

MCRAE ELEMENTARY

-- The first-grade classes had a penny drive to raise money for the American Red Cross disaster fund. Students collected $414.06. Compass Bank of Gainesville matched the students' collection to raise $828.12.

Wednesday -- choice of chili cheese fries with whole wheat roll or turkey melt with french fries, mixed vegetables, choice of fruit.

Thursday -- choice of Italian dunkers with cheesy bread or shaved ham on a bun, tossed salad, green beans and choice of fruit. …
