A 39-year-old man found a sword sticking out of his recliner and his antique shotgun, homemade rifle, two other rifles and a pistol missing when he returned to his home in the 7500 block of Wheat Road.

The firearms, valued at $1,600, were stolen between 5:45 p.m. Oct. 26 and 6 p.m. Sunday, police said.

The burglar gained entry by pulling open the screen and kicking in the French doors at the rear of the home, police said. Damage to the doors and the recliner was estimated at $650.

-- Two employees of the Kmart at 1501 Normandy Village Parkway were arrested on grand theft charges Sunday after a security camera caught them engaging in a layaway scam, police said.

An 18-year-old employee told police that a 22-year-old co-worker asked her to ring only layaway items that totaled less than $100. A loss-prevention employee watching the register with a security camera told police that on Oct. 24 he saw the women fail to ring up some of the items. About $600 worth of unscanned merchandise was then sealed in a box and stored under a fake name, police said.
