Sarah Jury Told of 'A Compelling Dossier'

DETECTIVES have built up a "compelling" dossier of evidence to prove that builder Roy Whiting kidnapped and murdered Sarah Payne, a court heard today.

Whiting, 42, has pleaded not guilty to seizing eight-year-old Sarah as she played with her brothers and sister in a field near Littlehampton, West Sussex, in July last year.

He has also denied murdering the child, whose naked body was found partially covered in a field off the A29 between Pulborough and Billingshurst, West Sussex, two weeks later.

But as the trial opened at Lewes Crown Court today, Timothy Langdale QC told the jury of seven women and five men: "The prosecution case is that there is compelling evidence that points to Whiting and to him alone as the man responsible for kidnapping this child and for killing her."

Whiting was dressed in a yellow shirt and blue jeans today and flanked by two male and a female prison officers in the dock, only feet from where Sarah's father Michael was sitting. …
