Hope is a hallmark of the holiday season.

But poverty, sickness and other trying circumstances can dim the hopes of many who are less fortunate than others.

The Hope Fund drive can make a difference.

The fund -- a joint effort of The Florida Times-Union, the University of North Florida, Volunteer Jacksonville and local charities -- raised $171,465 last year for needy families. The fund has raised about $892,000 since it began in 1994 and should eclipse the $1 million mark during the holiday season.

As part of the fund drive, UNF communications students write stories about needy families that are published in the Times-Union. The initial story appeared yesterday, with others to follow throughout the holiday season. Each story includes details on how to donate.

Volunteer Jacksonville oversees the distribution of the money, which is channeled equally to 44 social service agencies. Donations made after the annual drive are applied to the next year's campaign. …
