Lakeside Teacher Noted for Programs Physical Education Tracanna's Strength

For the past three years, Kim Tracanna has racked up a slew of awards for being among Florida's best in the business of teaching physical education.

The latest honor came in October, when the Lakeside Elementary School physical education instructor was recognized by the Florida Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, a professional association, for outstanding programs, creativity and innovation.

But she would rather talk about her students.

"None of these things ever mattered," she said. "Just so I can do my job . . . to keep on being able to do what I do."

Professionals in her field say she does what she does exceedingly well.

In 1999, the Florida Alliance selected Tracanna as Florida's physical education teacher of the year and she was one of the top six finalists for the national physical education teacher of the year award. Last year, Lakeside's physical education program was named the state's model physical education program by the American Heart Association. The latest Alliance award came at an Oct. 19 state conference in Jacksonville.

Tracanna said she appreciates -- but does not dwell on -- the professional recognition she has received. …
