Pressure Grows to Force Sinn Fein MPs to Declare Interests

MINISTERS came under strong pressure today to force Sinn Fein MPs to bow to Parliament's strict regime of declaring their outside interests.

The calls came from leading Unionists and Tories in the wake of last night's vote to allow the four Republican backbenchers the right to offices in the Commons and allowances worth [pound]107,000 each.

The four - Gerry Adams, Martin McGuinness, Pat Doherty and Michelle Gildernew - will get the perks in a governmentbacked move despite refusing to take their seats because they will not swear allegiance to the Crown.

However, as Commons rules stand they will not have to list their outside interests in the official-Commons register.

Today Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble called on the four to be brought under the interests regime by changing the rules. He told BBC Radio 4: "I think if someone is going to take up the position they should do the whole job and not be allowed to come and do what suits them. …
