Removing stains from holidays spills doesn't require a Miracle on 34th Street.

The most important thing to remember is act quickly. Immediately blot or wipe. Never rub a stain because that makes it set. Rinse the spot with cool water before laundering with a detergent. Here are some other tips from staffers at Maytag Appliances and SA8, a company that makes Bioquest, a biodegradable detergent.

Food coloring: Treat with a pre-spotter and launder according to fabric directions. If stains persist, re-launder and use an all-fabric bleach.

Candy canes: Rinse in warm water to dilute stain and remove surface stickiness. Launder as usual. Repeat if stain remains.

Chocolate: Sponge the stain promptly with cold water or soak in cold water. Pre-treat the remaining stain. Wash in the warmest water safe for the fabric.
