Article excerpt

Editor's note: The following are reader responses, edited for clarity and grammar, to a column by Bud Polquin of the Syracuse (N.Y.) Post-Standard criticizing the Gator Bowl's selection of Virginia Tech over Syracuse.

In the column, which appeared in the Times-Union on Nov. 29, Polquin referred to Jacksonville as Cowford, the city's original name, and wrote: "By any name, the town does not deserve the Syracuse University Orangemen, who are bound over the Christmas holidays for a better city, to a better team in a better facility."

Syracuse (9-3) plays Kansas State (6-5) at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the Insight.com Bowl in Phoenix, while Virginia Tech (8-3) plays Florida State (7-4) at 12:30 p.m. Jan. 1 in the Gator Bowl.

I encourage you to continue to belittle Jacksonville to discourage the thousands who yearly relocate from the paradise of upstate New York for the likes of Cowford. Lately, the area seems to be getting a bit too crowded for my tastes. By contrast, Syracuse seems to be able to handle all those desiring to relocate, but I don't think that will ever be an issue for which you should be too concerned. …
