Taking a Look Back at 2001 in Northwest St. Johns

Happy New Year. Another year has slipped by and the older I get the more I wonder: How does time really fly?

School's out for the holidays and several families in the Northwest loaded up cars with 10 boys and one girl and headed south on Interstate 95 to Orlando. Destination: T.D. Waterhouse Arena to see the Orlando Magic play the Washington Wizards in basketball.

The big draw for the game was to witness the great Michael Jordan in person. The adults who braved the trip were my husband, Greg, and I, Ted and Amy Finnigan, David and Teri Bledsoe, Curt and Casey Baker, and John and Joyce Metcalf along with all our kids.

After the excitement of the game was over, we all went to the hotel and watched the kids enjoy swimming in the rooftop pool as the adults sat around willing the weather to get cooler so it would feel like Christmas. A very special thank you goes out to Amy Finnigan for her hours of hard work just securing the tickets for the group.

The year 2001 was a good year for the northwest part of St. Johns County. We began the year with youth sports and ended the year with youth sports.

Also: we learned about different clubs in our public schools, witnessed people helping people in the area, Cunningham Creek Elementary school celebrated with its charter class of 1995, First Union's Julington Creek Financial Center opened, we focused on church group activities and events, the St. Johns Council of Aging got under way with lots of activities, ithere was the Fruit Cove School groundbreaking and school opening.

And: schoolwide carnivals, the loss of 16-year-old Lauren Blomberg from complications of bacterial meningitis, historical property was uncovered, horse spa was located, the loss of 44-year-old Rene Cato of Switzerland, St. …
