Like nearly everyone else associated with Steve Spurrier, broadcasters who covered the former Florida football coach were stunned with yesterday's announcement that he was stepping down.

Mick Hubert, who has served as the voice of Gator football throughout Spurrier's 11 seasons at Florida, said he didn't have an inkling of the resignation, but wasn't in total shock by the news either.

"If it's possible to be shocked yet not surprised, then I am," said Hubert, also host of Spurrier's TV and radio shows. "We all knew that this day would come at some point, that he wasn't going to coach forever. It's just that no one was expecting it this year."

CBS-TV announcer Verne Lundquist, who was assigned to five Gators games this year, expressed shock, but then recalled a conversation he had with Spurrier the day before the Florida State.

"The scenario I see, is that Tony Dungy will leave Tampa Bay to take the Vikings job and that Spurrier will move into the Tampa Bay coaching spot," said Corso who worked as an analyst or part of the ESPN GameDay crew at several Florida games this year. …
