Second-Guess Weaver? How Can You Not?

CHICAGO -- So this is how it ends, with the Jaguars giving all of Chicago reason to party like its 1985, with the offense trying to chase down a 304-pound reincarnation of The Fridge, with the kicker getting benched, with the coach calling timeouts in the final minute of a 20-point loss, with one question hanging over the head of the owner.

What would Steve Spurrier have done?

It's not a fair question. But, you know what, it is one that is going to be asked. Over and over.

Wayne Weaver is on the verge of making a decision unlike any other since he was awarded the franchise -- a decision that, if it backfires, will be second-guessed for a long, long time. Perhaps even as long as it took Keith Traylor to run 67 yards yesterday.

He is going to pass on the Spurrier Sweepstakes and give Tom Coughlin a contract extension.

Maybe Spurrier's success on Saturdays won't translate to Sundays. Weaver better hope that's the case. Because can you picture what things will be like in Jacksonville if, while the Jaguars try to tear apart the team and rebuild, Spurrier's offense is tearing things up in Carolina, Tampa Bay, Washington or wherever?

It's like kicker Mike Hollis said yesterday when asked about the reaction in the locker room when it came out that Weaver was about to give Coughlin an extension.

"Just use your imagination."

It probably should be noted that the week began with Hollis publicly criticizing Coughlin -- saying, among other things, that the coach once fined a player for a long overcoat -- and ended with him getting a 36-yard attempt blocked, missing an extra point and, we can only assume, hitchhiking home from Chicago.

Yesterday, the overcoats were short. And so were the kicks, passes and third-down conversions. …
