Six months after its closing, the site of the former HomeLife Furniture store near Regency Square is getting a new tenant, Furniture Mart. The Jacksonville-based chain is opening its third store in the 30,000-square-foot building in mid-February.

The site was bought for $2 million last month. The two other Furniture Marts are at 3030 Beach Blvd. and 11815 N. Main Street.

The chain, which is almost 40 years old, is run by brothers Aaron and Mike Gavronsky. Their late father, Ben, started the first store under the name Westconnet Furniture in the early 1960s. The brothers changed the store's name in 1977.

Furniture Mart specializes in mid- to premium-quality furniture at discounted prices. The company makes money by maintaining a high volume of sales.

Yesterday, Gavronsky said the HomeLife signage was being removed, and the store was undergoing cosmetic touch ups.

HomeLife Furniture Corp. closed its Jacksonville and Orange Park stores in July because of financial hardships.

At the time, it was the eighth largest furniture retailer in the country.


Neptune Beach-based Family Steak Houses of Florida has been the exclusive franchisee for Ryan's Family Steak House restaurants in North and Central Florida. But because the company was operating only 23 Ryan's restaurants at the end of 2001, rather than the 25 as required by the franchise agreement, Ryan's Family Steak Houses Inc. has exercised an option to terminate the exclusive nature of the agreement.

Ryan's has told Family Steak Houses that it has no plans to build its own restaurants in North Florida in 2002, but it may do so in 2003. Family Steak Houses said that probably would not have an adverse effect on its operations but could limit its potential to develop new restaurants in the future. …
