Maker of Airport Check-In Kiosks Tries Security Work

A Lake Mary company that previously made airline industry computer products is branching out to airline security.

Kinetics Inc. is developing a fingerprint-based or iris-based verification system that could be used to help provide security clearance information about frequent fliers, company spokesman Jim Brown said.

Kinetics is developing the so-called K-Pass for two airlines interested in the system, but it still would need approval from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The system, which Brown said would probably be most popular with business travelers, would augment other security measures and wouldn't replace searches or other procedures.

"What this is intended to do is make the system more efficient and more secure," he said.

Kinetics, which has 15 employees, does most of its business producing the self-service check-in kiosks at airport ticket counters to let passengers check in through a touch-sensitive computer screen.

Kinetics' TouchPort allows passengers to electronically check in, change seat assignments, purchase or upgrade tickets, and check bags. The company, which was founded in 1988, has developed 1,500 of the kiosks.

Customers of Alaska Airlines, American Trans Air, America West Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines used Kinetics' self-service check-in devices at record rates during the holiday season, Kinetics said.

Continental Airlines reported that more than 650,000 customers used its eService Centers to check in for U.S. flights.
