CRYSTAL PALACE defender Danny Granville makes his home debut against Gillingham tonight admitting he should never have left London in the first place.

Granville, who joined the Eagles from Manchester City for [pound]500,000 at the end of December, claims he is still rueing the day he left Chelsea.

The 26-year-old was brought to Stamford Bridge by then manager Cambridge in 1997 and such was his progress he played in the Blues' European Cup Winners' Cup success a year later.

But with Graeme Le Saux and Celestine Babayaro providing competition for his place, Granville turned down the offer of a new contract and signed for Leeds in a [pound]1.6 million deal that summer.

But Granville made only 14 appearances for Leeds before being sold to Manchester November 1999. Granville said: "It was such a big squad at Chelsea so when Leeds and George Graham came in with a big offer, I just thought it was a great move.

"Chelsea wanted me to stay, but I thought with Le Saux and Babayaro around it was best for me to move. …
