The Florida Times-Union, publisher of the newspaper or Web site you're reading, has applied to the city for building permits to start a $3.2 million renovation, including a remodeled newsroom that will include a television studio.

The Times-Union, owned by Morris Communications Corp. of Augusta, Ga., operates from a two-building complex at 1 Riverside Ave., in the Riverside area near downtown.

General Manager Bobby Martin said yesterday that the renovations, furnishings and equipment will total an estimated $3.2 million. Pending approvals, renovations could start in mid-February and be completed in two six-month phases by February 2003.

"It's time to do it," Martin said. The buildings were completed in 1967.

The areas targeted for renovation have not been significantly remodeled since the office and production center were built. According to the permit applications, the renovation costs will total $2.6 million.

The publishing company has applied for permits to renovate 57,000 square feet on the second floor of the production building, 9,000 square feet of office space on the third floor of the administration building, and some locker rooms in the production building.

Those permits show construction costs of $2.15 million for the second-floor production renovations, which comprise the newsroom and advertising departments; $300,000 for the third-floor administration building renovations for the accounting department; and $150,000 for the locker room renovations for use by the production workforce.

Dana B. Kenyon Co. is the project contractor, and Rink Reynolds Diamond Fisher Wilson is the architect.

The newsroom renovations will include a television studio that will allow the newsroom more efficient interaction with its Web site, Jacksonville. …
