Aaron Carter Pop Concert Is Acceptable Fluff on Ice

Carter kicked off his 24-date U.S. tour Friday night at the Coliseum using a set that resembled a glacial theme park and beaming footage of wintry locales onto three large video screens.

The 75-minute set bounded through most of the 14-year-old singer's hits, which often are lighthearted embellishments on previous pop hits for other artists.

Whether it's subtly gleaning Kool & the Gang's Celebration or incorporating elements of such fluff-pop staples as Crush on You and Break My Stride, Carter's up-to-the-minute production team always tries to create a where-have-I-heard-this-before feeling.

The songs Friday night sounded basically they way they do on the records, though Carter deserves credit for appearing to really sing the material. Throughout the performance, the audience could hear his hard breathing and vocal imperfections -- and that was fine, that was good. …
