Paul McCartney, U2, Mariah Carey and the Boston Pops are musical headliners at Sunday's Super Bowl XXXVI, televised live on Fox from the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.

TV's most-watched single-day sporting event is expected to reach 130 million viewers in the United States and 800 million worldwide. Last year's event was the fifth most-watched program in television history and ranks fourth among all Super Bowls.

This year's match up between AFC champs the New England Patriots and NFC victor the St. Louis Rams is the third to be televised by Fox. This is a record ninth Super Bowl held in New Orleans.

For Super Bowl XXXVI, the theme is "Heroes, Hope & Homeland," as the broadcast remembers and reflects on the atrocities of Sept. 11. Fox Sports' Super Bowl Sunday begins at 1:30 p.m. with John Madden and Pat Summerall and The 19th Annual Blockbuster All-Madden Team. That's followed at 3 p.m. by a special three-hour edition of Fox NFL Sunday starring regulars Terry Bradshaw, James Brown, Cris Collinsworth and Howie Long. Long and Bradshaw, by the way, are also featured in a special one-hour episode of Malcolm in the Middle, which follows the telecast on Fox.

The pre-game program will have a number of special features in keeping with the day's patriotic theme. One is a tribute using the music of Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man and excerpts from A Lincoln Portrait, performed by the Boston Pops with conductor Keith Lockhart. Lincoln's words will be presented on film by America's living former presidents, with Nancy Reagan contributing in place of Ronald Reagan. The Declaration of Independence is the focus of another dramatic presentation.

Also in the pre-game festivities, such pop groups as Barenaked Ladies and No Doubt will appear in live performances. In the finale, McCartney will perform his hit single Freedom, written in the aftermath of Sept. 11.

Game time is 6 p.m. Once both teams are on the field, Mary J. Blige and Marc Anthony will perform America the Beautiful. They will be followed by Carey singing the national anthem. The Boston Pops will also perform during both songs.

Like the pricey commercial spots that air during annual Super Bowl telecasts, the halftime show is the center of fanfare and hyperbole. This year's event is no exception. The Irish band U2 is the headliner of the E*Trade Super Bowl XXXVI Halftime Show. The group has released 14 albums and won 10 Grammy Awards, three of them in 2001 for All That You Can't Leave Behind's first single, Beautiful Day. …
