Jackson RB Will Be Better Than Fason

Not that anyone would ever accuse me of being a recruitnik, but one of the biggest mysteries is why Jackson High's superb athlete, Leon Washington, can be Mr. Football in Florida and not considered even a Top 100 prospect by some major recruiting services (Bobby Burton seems to be the only one with good eyes).

Fletcher's Ciatrick Fason, who committed to Florida, is a more highly regarded running back, but I'll be surprised if the faster, savvy Washington doesn't have the better college career. Washington, who is expected to sign with Florida State over South Carolina, just seems to have the type of instincts that are more apt to make you go, "Wow!"

Florida coach Ron Zook evidently thinks Washington is pretty special, too. Even after Washington ruled out the Gators, a persistent Zook keeps trying to reel him in.

You know what the hiring of Tony Sparano as Jaguars' tight ends coach means? That when Mark Brunell throws the tight ends catchable balls, they better not drop those passes or Tony's associates, Silvio Dane and Paulie Walnuts, will have them staying after practice for, um, conditioning drills. . . . You know what Alabama's football program going on five-year NCAA probation means? Time for Crimson Tide boosters to step up their search for dirt on Auburn. . . . With Kentucky also on NCAA probation for violations committed under the previous coach, it looks like the street near Commonwealth Stadium called Hal Mumme Pass will have to be renamed Cheater's Way. . . . Two schools on football probation and Florida coming up short in its bid for the conference title. Yep, it sure looks like the old Southeastern Conference is back. . . .

What will take longer: our military/intelligence forces finding Osama bin Laden or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hiring a football coach? …
