Gators Hire Thompson as Defensive Coordinator Ex-Hogs Coach Completes Zook Staff

GAINESVILLE -- The University of Florida has hired Arkansas defensive coordinator John Thompson to fill the same position for the Gators, the school announced yesterday.

Thompson, 46, has been an assistant at the collegiate level for 17 seasons, the last two with the Razorbacks as co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach in 2000 and defensive coordinator/secondary coach last season.

"John is a proven coach with an excellent track record in the SEC as a defensive coordinator," UF coach Ron Zook said. "We have similar philosophies.

"The system he's played and that I've coached are very similar. He likes his players to play fast, have fun and he makes the game fun for them. We're excited about that."

Under Thompson's direction, the Razorbacks led the Southeastern Conference in total defense in 2000.

Last season Arkansas limited Tennessee to 13 points and South Carolina to seven in the regular season and Oklahoma to 10 in the Cotton Bowl. …
