Zook, Bowden Meet at Banquet

Bobby Bowden and Ron Zook have met. If the tenor of that meeting is an indication, the recent icy level of the Florida-Florida State rivalry may begin to thaw.

Bowden, architect of the perennial Florida State powerhouse and tied for second all time with 323 career victories, and Zook, the new Florida coach, were seated only a couple of chairs apart Friday at a sports banquet in Fort Walton Beach.

"I've always gotten along with the coaching staff there," Zook said about Florida State. "It's always going to be a great rivalry. It's one of those things that makes college football in Florida a great thing."

Zook attended the 33rd annual All Sports Association banquet, marking was the first time both coaches of the two rival teams had attended together. Zook's predecessor, Steve Spurrier, never attended, according to the event's organizers. "We want to keep a strong presence in Florida," Zook said. "There's a lot of Gators here. It's important to be a part of it."


TWO DEAD AT ARGENTINE SOCCER MATCH -- Pre-game violence by rival fans at a soccer match left two people dead yesterday -- one stabbed to death and the other fatally shot in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Twelve people were also injured and the kickoff was delayed when Independiente fans threw a smoke bomb at Racing's goalkeeper.


UK PAIR SUSPENDED FOR VOLS GAME --Kentucky sophomore guards Gerald Fitch, the fourth-leading scorer, and Cory Sears were suspended and will not play in tomorrow's game against Tennessee for "behavior detrimental to the team," coach Tubby Smith said in a statement yesterday.

A Lexington television station, WTVQ-TV, reported that Fitch and Sears got into a fight on the team plane as the No. 10 Wildcats were returning to Lexington after Saturday's loss to Georgia.


MOORER BEATS DAVIS EASILY -- Former world heavyweight champion Michael Moorer scored two knockdowns in the first round and went on to win a unanimous decision over Robert Davis Saturday night in a 10-round bout at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. …
