Zook, Bowden Meet at Banquet

Article excerpt

Bobby Bowden and Ron Zook have met. If the tenor of that meeting is an indication, the recent icy level of the Florida-Florida State rivalry may begin to thaw.

Bowden, architect of the perennial Florida State powerhouse and tied for second all time with 323 career victories, and Zook, the new Florida coach, were seated only a couple of chairs apart Friday at a sports banquet in Fort Walton Beach.

"I've always gotten along with the coaching staff there," Zook said about Florida State. "It's always going to be a great rivalry. It's one of those things that makes college football in Florida a great thing."

Zook attended the 33rd annual All Sports Association banquet, marking was the first time both coaches of the two rival teams had attended together. Zook's predecessor, Steve Spurrier, never attended, according to the event's organizers. "We want to keep a strong presence in Florida," Zook said. "There's a lot of Gators here. It's important to be a part of it."
