People Priority No. 1 for Volunteer

Article excerpt

Whenever a volunteer or community leader is needed in Jacksonville Beach, especially in the South Pablo Beach area, Marjorie Holloway's name usually comes up.

Holloway, who is in her 60s, considers her community and its people her No. 1 priority.

"She cares about her community," said Brenda Frinks, a friend and fellow volunteer in community organizations. "She works to help people."

Holloway has lived in Jacksonville Beach all of her life. She attended Jacksonville Beach Elementary when the school was a four-room structure for African-American children. She later taught third and fifth grades for 16 years at the school.

Holloway's volunteer work began seven years ago with her helping to establish Pablo Renewal In Duval East, a non-profit organization intent on improving the South Pablo Beach area.

She also serves on the Jacksonville Beach Code Enforcement Board; she's an advocate and board member at the Mission House, a day center for the homeless; she volunteers with the Jacksonville Beach Elementary School Preservation Committee and helps distribute food to needy families in the community.

Holloway retired from teaching in 1994, but hasn't had time to enjoy that retirement.

"One of the things that I wanted to do when I retired was wear that white and pink uniform and help at the front desk of the hospital," she said. "I just didn't have time to do it."

Once she retired, people were asking her to help in the community, she said.

"There is a great need," Holloway said. "You don't have too many people who will volunteer and do these things. People just won't get involved, and I just got out there and got involved."

Holloway said she remembers a time when people all knew each other in the community and could leave their doors open without fear of crime. …
