ARTreach Auction Good for Bid-Ness

Article excerpt

Byline: Ivette Yee, Times-Union staff writer

There's nothing like an art auction to bring out your competitive streak, and at this year's ARTreach 2002, boy were there streaks.

The event, held Feb. 21 at The Haskell Building, raised more than $55,000 for AIDS-related prevention, education and treatment programs and support services.

ARTreach also featured a juried art show with cash prizes. Jeremy Lucas' Towels in the Shower Room at the YMCA won first place. Toni Charneco's Summer Picnic took second place, and a clay platter by Myra B. Schick's won third place.

One of the highlights of Thursday's event was seeing 9-year-old Sky Kreba of Riverside standing by her artwork, persuading eventgoers to up their bids. The youngest artist to donate art, Sky was in bed by the time bids closed, but I hear she was thrilled that her painting sold for $500 (Delores Barr Weaver placed the winning bid).

Indeed, art lovers weren't shy about besting each other's bids at the silent and live auctions. The event's signature art piece, Steve Williams' The Gift of Hope, sold for $1,500, as did an untitled piece by Mac Evans.

Alas, even I got outbid (by another Times-Union employee!) on an art noir-ish piece by Jean Lijou titled, She's Not There.

Oh well, there's always next year. And there's nothing like losing for a good cause.

Cheers to Ponte Vedra Beach photographer Patty DiRienzo, who was awarded a $2,000 research grant by the Florida Humanities Council. Her year-long project, "Fish Camps and Mermaids," will explore the disappearing architectural landscape of old Florida. Local sites featured in the project include the American Red Cross Life Saving Station in Jacksonville Beach, the Palace Saloon in Fernandina Beach and Marineland near St. Augustine.
