THE organisers of the Oscars are planning a revamp of the awards ceremony after weary TV viewers deserted this year's event in droves. US audience figures show that the 74th Academy Awards had the lowest ratings in history as millions went to bed while the ceremony dragged on into the early hours. The end eventually came after four hours and 20 minutes. Host Whoopi Goldberg, above, has also been criticised for what many commentators thought were pointless remarks criticising the lack of black actors in films such as Lord Of The Rings and Gosford Park, set in an English country house in the 1930s.

Briton stabbed after giving lift to Alice Springs hitchhiker A MAN has been charged with attempted murder after a knife attack on a British tourist and his US girlfriend in Australia. The stabbing, by a hitchhiker, had echoes of last year's shooting and abduction of Briton Peter Falconio. The 23-yearold British man was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by his American female companion when they picked up the hitchhiker in Alice Springs yesterday. While they were driving, the hitchhiker stabbed the man in the back. The unnamed Briton is in a satisfactory condition in hospital. Police said there was no connection between the attack and Mr Falconio's disappearance.

I ripped out shark's eye as it bit off my foot, says surfer A YOUTH has told how he ripped out a shark's eye to escape as it was biting off his foot. Hoku Aki, 17, right, was attacked on Monday while body boarding in Hawaii, about 150 yards off a beach at Kauai.

Strumming a ukulele in his hospital bed, he said: "I tried to open the mouth and get it off me. That didn't work so I grabbed the shark's eye and ripped it out and he let me go." He added he thought he was going to die. "It was tossing me all over the place. I heard my leg break."
